  1.  Author: William Bridge (1600-1671)

  • Life: Book includes short biography (p. Ix-xi). He entered Emanuel College, Cambridge in 1619 where he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degree. Bridge was ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1627. After being excommunicated and ordered away for English soil for nonconformity, he settled in Rotterdam in 1636. There, he eventually co-pastored with Jeremiah Burroughs. One biography says of him, “Bridge was an excellent preacher, able scholar, and prolific writer with a well-furnished library. He arose at 4 a.m. each day to search the Scriptures, confess his sins, and commune with God. He often studied for seventeen hours a day, yet he did not become an ivory tower theologian.” He was known for being kind to his congregants.

  1.  Overall Summary/review:

  • This book was once Bridge’s sermons on Christ’s Priestly Work (p. Xi) and still reads very much like a collection of sermons which we will look at more in a moment.

  • Each chapter breaks down a different doctrine of Christ’s Priestly work and the asks the question, “How do we find comfort and holiness in this?” (Table of Contents)

  • Bridge does an excellent job raising and answering potential objections to the things he teaches. He often says, “You might say to me...”

  • Bridge was a very compelling preacher and constantly preached Christ. As the editor pointed out (p. Xii). His desire was for the listener or reader of his words to be moved to living faith and through faith have peace, comfort, and holiness through Christ.

  • First, let’s look at how Bridge preached Christ: (p. Xiv, 3, 13, 37, 42, 83)

  • Second, let’s look at how Bridge preached experientially; how he desired you to live out your faith in Christ: (p. 26, 27, 49, 49-50, 59, 60)

  • After Bridge has walked you through all of these great promises of Christ’s Priestly work and shown you how these bring you to have comfort and holiness, he gives these closing remarks. (p. 123, 124).
