  1.  Author: Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834 – 1892)

  • Life: Spurgeon was the minister of Spurgeon was pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. Though some fault him for his lack of expository preaching (myself included), no one can complain about his enthusiasm for the Lord, his Biblically sound teaching, and his desire for others to know Christ. Spurgeon was a genius in his own right (p. V)

  1.  Overall Summary/review:

  • Spurgeon believed that Christmas was not something to only be reflected on during the month of December. He encourages us to read, reflect, and contemplate the birth of the Savior throughout the year.

  • He writes this book in a very poetic and beautiful way, which aids the reader to truly understand the beauty of Christmas. He also provides quotations of poetry sprinkled throughout (p. 14, 64, 71, 109) (p. 38-38, 59-60, 77-78, 110, 124-125).

  • This book is a very helpful guide in understanding the true meaning of Christmas and gives helpful thoughts on different passages of Scripture (next Wednesday, we’ll look at one of those in particular). (p. Vi, vii, table of contents)

  • There are many short chapters, and that allows the book to be read as a devotional book either on your own, or as a family.

  • Cosmetically, this book is very Christmas-like. The dust cover being green, the book itself being the classic Banner of Truth red, and the end pages being green make the book specially themed. The book also includes a yellow ribbon for reading.

  • Quotes: p. 9, 14, 27, 40, 44, 64, 92
